I thought I wouldn't find any other updates to this story. Don't ask why I thought that, I know it's going to be a never ending story. Here's another update to this story, someone else has split from the maind OLPC casue and created their own company. They plan to use the technology they develope and provide it to other manufacturers.

you can read about it at:
http://www.baselinemag.com/article2/0,1540,2247725,00.asp

I love how I said "provide" to others. I wonder how much that person will make by selling .... cough cough cough .... providing their invented technology to others.

Thanks to all the companies that did their hard work on reporting on these issues and giving us something to gossip about.

Hello everyone, I thought this matter would be layed to rest. But it seems that everyone is pointing the finger back and forth between the 2 companies. If you want more gossip on what's going on, check out these links:

Hello and here's an update. That colleague of mine told me that he's returning the memory for a refund. It's not working and he doesn't know what to do. His G5 doesn't have any warranty and apple refuses to help him because he didn't purchase the hardware through them. I offered to visit his home and look at the machine, but he's always busy and wants to reschedule. My final words on this matter (hopefully) toward him were: "If you love the MAC OS and that's want you want, but you want a high end, multi gig and core machine, then build your own. Or purchase a custom built from a mod shop and install the MAC OS on it that you recently bought. He claimed he's in the market for a new machin. I said, don't waste your money on upgrading something you have no support on and your having a hard time trying to repair or upgrade. Lots of places are selling quad core machines for an average price of $500. Hopefully this is the end of the story.

Hello everyone, an update is in order. It's now 6 days later and unfortunately I don't have a follow up regarding this situation. I haven't seen my colleague to ask, how's it going? I can only hope that he solved his problem before XMAS. Regarding my comments, "apple" and "pain in the ace," I like their new machines (after they signed and allowed to use outside... hardware). They're doing a great job in delivering multi-core machines to homes and small businesses. I would love to have an 8 core machine for gaming, media editing and my personal whatever I want to do.

I will some day soon and it will be under my hand (I love to build my own machines). Personally, I've never used the apple support site and I think it's a "pain in the ace" to locate information specifically for a certain machine. I did eventually locate the area on their site that I could pull up anything I wanted, based on serial number or model number. Apple did do a good job at providing support material to their users, because I was able to locate information on how to take apart the machine within seconds. Of couruse these materials were based on a general range on machines, catagorized on their model numbers. Now, on to the location of a serial number.

It's a bad idea to locate the serial number on the inside of the case. If I owned a hardware boutique and my users called in for support, I wouldn't want a noob user opening the case to locate a serial number. NO WAY! They could easily damage an internal component and then would have to use my warranty program to replace the part. Too costly on behalf of my company. Simply, the serial number of the machine should follow suite of all other major manufactures; place it on the outside and behind the machine! Any joe at any age (even a 6 year old) can look behind a pc and get the serial number. I don't want them inside the machine.

I know what you're thinking, you can use the MAC OS to pull up the serial number. Ok, not a bad idea, but what if the power supply is dead? No juice to locate the number. How about (in my colleague's case) if you upgraded to the latest release of the MAC OS and the serial number doesn't appear in the software? Oh too bad, you have to open the machine.

I won't speak anymore about this subject unless I get an update from my colleague. For now, happy holidays everyone!
